The Birth Flower for January is the Carnation

carnationsThe birth flower for the month of January is the carnation. Its nickname is the “carn.” They are indigenous to Europe and Asia where they have been cultivated for over two centuries. Now they are grown in many parts of the world. You’ll find a generous selection of floral designs at Breen’s Florist and our staff is always eager to help you choose or create an arrangement using carnations for the January birthday of a special person in your life.

Carnations are known by the scientific name of Dianthus caryophyllus. Dianthus is Greek for “flowers of the Gods.” Before it was widely cultivated to the point of creating more species and hybrids, the flowers were originally pink. That accounts for the meaning of the common name — flesh-toned.

There are roughly 300 species of carnations and 100s of hybrids. They emit a spicy scent, and that led to references to carnations as either Clove Pink or Gillyflower.

Carnations are sold in a range of colors, including pink, purple, red, white, and even bicolored striped varieties.

  • Red signifies passionate love.
  • Yellow is a sign of rejection or disdain.
  • White symbolizes innocence and steadfastness
  • Purple is associated with whimsy and capriciousness
  • Striped carnations suggest a feeling of regret over unrequited love.

Our Birthday Bouquet is consists of orange roses, fuchsia spray roses, purple carnations, and green button poms. They’re artfully arranged in a light green square ceramic vases. The arrangement is pulled together with designer ribbon in coordinating lime green.
