Homecoming Mum Traditions

Football mums are big part of the social scene for high school students to welcome back the school year. Usually worn to school the Friday before the school’s homecoming football game, this Texas tradition gets bigger each year because as always, “Everything’s bigger in Texas.”

Florists find themselves swamped with custom orders, but at Breen’s Florist, we love this time of year. Mums were once designed with fresh large mum flowers, but today’s football mums are created with silk flowers, streamers, ribbons, bows, lights, plush, and trinkets that celebrate the arrival of Football season for high schoolers.

These large creations are typically worn by girls while the boys wear a mini version designed on a garter for the upper arm. Both styles show school spirit with the school’s colors and may showcase trinkets based on various sports and activities. Texas high school seniors might choose silver and white or gold and white based on their school. Each football mum is specifically designed to each student with their name and date’s name for the school dance.

For those students who want to be a little more unique, quite often our designers will create mums that step away from school colors to embrace neon colors, black and white, and even animal prints. Specialty items like boas, feathers, and noise makers may be incorporated based on the individual.

In Texas, the bigger the better. Many students will try to out-design their friends or even create a homecoming mum party where everyone gets together to share in the design activities. Breen’s Florist has a complete supply of ribbons, lights, and everything you need to create your masterpiece at home. We pride ourselves on being the Homecoming Headquarters for your community.

With four locations in Houston, Breen’s is available for design tips, supplies, or even a location to have a homecoming design party.
